STEVEN E. MURPHY
A lifetime of looking. A practice built around seeing.
Architecture has been the thread running through my life since I first saw Frank Lloyd Wright's Walker House at five years old. The practice came later. The way of seeing did not.
THE BEGINNING
Before architecture was a profession, it was an instinct.
I grew up around Carmel and Pacific Grove, where buildings, landscape, fog and shelter often seemed inseparable. At five, the Walker House showed me that a house could belong to its site rather than merely occupy it. I began reading floor plans the way other children read comic books.
Decades later, that early fascination became SEM Architectural Consultants: a deliberately small practice devoted to architecture and interiors that feel inevitable once you experience them.
“Good design is not a collection of features. It is a relationship between everything.”
HOW I SEE
A few principles hold the work together.
The land designs the house
Orientation, topography, climate and the path of arrival are not background conditions. They are the beginning of the architecture.
Light is the fifth material
Light has weight, direction and temperature. It shapes rooms as surely as stone, wood, plaster or steel
Reveal, do not display
A house should unfold. Compression and release, framed views and partial glimpses create experience rather than instant consumption.
Simplify before adding
Continuity usually does more than decoration. One floor, a disciplined palette and a clear organizing idea allow the important things to breathe
WHY A SMALL PRACTICE
Your project does not pass through a department.
You work directly with the person doing the looking, questioning and designing. That keeps the conversation personal, the thinking continuous and the project anchored to its original idea.
The aim is not to impose a signature style. It is to discover what your house, site and life are already asking to become - and then make that answer clear.
